ArchiTexture DANCE COMPANY
Site-specific dance in Orange County

What do the Mission San Juan Capistrano, the tallship Brig Pilgrim, the Saddleback College Library, and the Calit2 building on the UC Irvine campus have in common? They have each served as performance locations for ArchiTexture Dance Company, a new site-specific company that creates choreography in unusual places, inspired by both architecture and environment.

Deidre Cavazzi, the company's artistic director and choreographer, speaks passionately about her creations. "I really enjoy working corroboratively with the community, and bringing dance into new spaces. It is thrilling to have the dance to choreograph in historic places like the Great Stone Church or aboard the Brig Pilgrim; audiences typically associate contemporary dance with the stage, and it is exciting to challenge expectations and invite viewers to take a second look at a space."

Cavazzi works closely with the twenty dancers in her company, rehearsing on location whenever possible. In September the dancers premiered their new work at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, entitled Garden Suite. The audience was invited to follow the dancers as they performed in nine locations around the Mission during the hour-long event.
