Maintaining Your Precious Landscape
Considering
Southern California averages just less than 10-12 inches of natural
rainfall annually, we can technically be classified as a desert.
Only through water has Southern California been able to grow and
thrive; whether through natural rains or monumental aqueduct projects.
Water systems have completely altered the appearance of our surroundings,
as well as the value of our land and homes. With water, of course,
we have beautifully re-configured what nature creates with sunshine
and ocean breezes. Irrigation enables us to grow our symbolic
foliage, oranges and roses. Irrigation gives us lawns and golf
courses. Irrigation enables Southern California-the desert next
to the ocean-to provide fruit and vegetables for much of the world.
For residential
landscapes, irrigation facilitates a similar bending of Mother
Nature's will. Most homeowners with lawns rely upon timed watering
systems, which reduce runoff and virtually eliminate the need
to hand-water. Likewise, those who design their yards with flowers,
shrubs, vines, bushes, and native or imported plant species, use
irrigation systems to minimize water usage and to promote year-round
color.
As the yards
and plants grow and change over time, so should the irrigation
system. Whatever your landscape's contours and soil composition,
irrigation systems should be evaluated and adjusted to change
and evolve by either raising up or moving heads, installing new
heads, repairing breaks and leaks, or simply converting a system
to drip to conserve water.
Most importantly,
though, irrigation systems promote efficient use of water. Since
Southern California landscapes must make the most of otherwise
inhospitable clay soils, irrigation systems minimize many yard-maintenance
difficulties. Whatever the need, maintenance of the irrigation
system is critical in maintaining the overall look and beauty
of our yards.
